A Healthy Road Trip?

In case my mentions of going on vacation and “by Camera Phone” posts haven’t given it away, I am currently on vacation.  We decided to take a road trip to Phoenix to visit some family in New Mexico and a college roommate of mine in Phoenix.  While I was/ am crazy excited to see a lot of places I’ve never been before – Memphis, my aunt and uncle’s digs, the Grand Freaking Canyon! – I am not super excited about the potential to gain back the 7lbs I’ve worked so very hard to lose over the last month. Plus my official DietBet weigh-out was two days into the trip, and I was not willing to give up my winnings due to poor timing!  

But let’s face it, road trips?  They’re not exactly known to be the healthiest vacation ever.  Sitting on my ass in the car for hours on end.  Eating meal after meal at restaurants, fast food joints, or worse, gas stations.  So in attempt to limit road trip weight gain, I actually approached this trip with a plan.

So what is my game plan you ask.  Well, first up – snacks and meals on the road. Before we left we took a trip to Costco and stocked up on (mostly pre-portioned) healthy snacks. We packed a cooler and grocery bag with water, a 5lb bag of baby carrots, a case of 2oz bags of pretzel crisps, single servings of hummus, cheese and trail mix that I pre-portioned into single servings before we left, some packets of instant oatmeal, a jar of peanut butter, bananas, and some Chobani.

The plan was to keep breakfasts and lunches as healthy and “normal” as possible and let dinner be my splurge. So far, so good.

The second part of the plan was to make sure I was doing some kind of movement every day – either formally working out or just taking 5 – 10 minutes to walk around whenever we stop for gas or potty breaks or food. I also brought my yoga matt with so yoga classes downloaded on it. We also plan on hiking in the Grand Canyon and a few other spots.

The final part of my plan was setting a couple goals and a reward. If I worked out at least three times, did yoga twice, and tracked all my eats (all part of my February goals) I’m buying myself cycling shoes. I really want some cycling shoes for soon classes so my.motivation is high.

With any luck, I’ll at least limit the damage I do this week.
