Back at the end of June Krista invited me to be her plus one at the Kick-Off Backyard Fun with OFF! party. The event featured crafting with and outdoor entertaining tips from DIY Network’s Jeanne Benedict.
I should probably note that I am not a crafty person. I can turn out some mean food crafts, but more often than not, my crafting tends to flop. But I want to be more crafty, I try to be crafty. I’m hoping crafting turns out to be one of those practice makes perfect things. The more I craft, the better they get right?
Like any good event focusing on outdoor entertaining, it was held outdoors at the Lincoln Park Conservatory. Since it was sponsored by Off!, we ere all given the opportunity to try the OFF!® Clip-On™ Insect Repellent. I’m sure you’ve seen commercials for these things, but in case you’ve been living under a rock (or because I think I’m supposed to include this information…) the “OFF!® Clip-On™ Insect Repellent is a personal mosquito repellent that doesn’t have to applied directly to skin. The quiet battery powered fan circulates an odorless repellent and within minutes creates head-to-toe protection for up to 12 hours. If you move allow a few minutes for the unit to rebuild its protection.”
After some mingling with other local bloggers, Krista and I set to work creating our crafts. Project #1 was a beach themed center piece. I can total pour sand in a vase so this one was easy peasy, and I was actually quite impressed with my final product.
Project #2 was decorating a flower pot in which we planted geraniums and impatiens. This was definitely the more frustrating project for me! Sometimes I can be too much of a perfectionist.
Overall, I had a blast at this event. Jeanne was so friendly and so fun to chat with. She had so many awesome ideas that I would love to try one day. Ya know, if I even get good at crafting. Chatting with the other bloggers and catching up with Krista was great as well. Living in the suburbs, I often feel so far removed from the Chicago bloggers. It was really nice to be able to make the connection. Plus, there was a variety of blogging niches represented (mommy-bloggers, fashion, running, DIY, etc) so it was nice to break away from my usual healthy living blog niche.
I’ve actually used the Off! Clip-Ons several times since the event and I have to say, I’m a fan. Bug spray in general doesn’t seem to make a huge difference for me, (read: I still inevitably end up with several mosquito bites.) and I don’t think this is any more effective than standard bug spray. However, not having to apply it to my skin is a huge win for me. I generally just forego the bug spray in order to avoid the sticky, greasy bug spray feeling. I’ll definitely be purchasing refill packs and using this guy as the summer wears on.
