088. Grammar School Lunch

Two of my co-workers (and friends) invited me to join them for lunch today in the building across the street. They were going to grab lunch and eat in the cafeteria type area of the building. Having already bought lunch out two days this week, I really wasn’t feeling another lunch out, but I wanted to join them. I decided a fully-portable, no heating necessary lunch was my solution.

And so I present to you, my grammar school throwback lunch.

I’ve got a PB&J sandwich (though the sandwich actually has cranberry apple butter not technically jelly), baby carrots, an apple, and a Kashi cookie. Pretty balanced lunch over all, I’ve got my fruit, veggie, whole grains, and some protein. Plus, hello? Cookie!

The funny thing about my grammar school throwback lunch is when I was actually in grammar school, I wouldn’t touch a peanut butter and jelly sandwich with a 10-foot pole! I hated PB&J. I ate cheese on bread pretty much every day for 10 years.

Along with my lunch I had some “BlueNectar” blueberry cranberry juice. Usually I just drink water with my lunch, but since I don’t have a water bottle at work, I needed a portable beverage. It just so happened that one of the agencies we work with sent us a gift basket containing 3 of these babies. The juice itself wasn’t bad. It a pretty simple ingredients list: water, juice concentrates (blueberry, cranberry, apple, and white grape), and natural coloring and flavoring (whatever that actually is.) I liked that the juice actually tasted like fruit rather than sugar water, but it could have used a bit of sweetness since blueberrie and cranberries are both on the tart side of fruits.

I didn’t actually eat the apple i brought. I took the picture at home before I packed my lunch up. When it came time to actually eat, I was full after the sandwich, carrots, and cookie. I’ll eat the apple as an afternoon snack if I’m hungry later.

085. Welcome to the Big Leagues

Welcome to the new, and soon to be improved, Girl Can… blog!  I’m very excited to be on the wordpress platform!  There are so many more features!

I’m still trying to work some stuff out, but I figured it was time to start posting here and build the site as I go.  I hope to get all of my blogspot posts imported here very soon.  (Anyone have tips for doing this?)  I’ll also be creating some pages for things I track regularly – my 10 in 2010, weekly meal and fitness plans, my running and training schedules.  I’m really excited.  I think moving was exactly what I needed to really make this blog everything I want it to be!

The oatmeal I had for breakfast this morning really held me over.  I didn’t even need to eat my morning snack!

On my way into the office I stopped at Starbucks to grab a cup of tea.  For the last two weeks, I’ve been forgetting to bring in the box of tea I have at home, and today I was really craving some Zen.  Sadly, my tea was not good awful!  It was so bitter.  I’m not sure if the water was too hot or if it was just overpowering because they had two giant, full leaf tea bags in there, but either way it did not please me.  I forced myself ot drink half of it, but then I threw it away.   It was really disappointing until I discovered the tea rack in our main office kitchen had finally been restocked with Zen!  (Needless to say, I took about 5 bags to horde at my desk!)

For lunch today I hit Freshii.  I’m a big fan of this place except that they’re kind of expensive.  Freshii is easily the healthiest not-brought-from-home lunch option.  They have salads, burritos, soup or rice bowls you can order or you can build your own.  They also have a nutrition calculator on their website for the build your own option.  Which is great since I’m making a concerted effort this month to really watch my calorie intake. 

I built my own rice bowl with brown rice, bean sprouts, black beans, broccoli, carrots, red onions, sweet corn, grilled tofu and salsa.  I love that the rice bowls come in a cute little Chinese food style container.  Sadly, I didn’t take a picture though.  I always forgot to bring my camera or phone with me when I eat downstairs.

Tonight I’ve got yoga, and I’m going to get in some swimming (hopefully).  I also hope to get some more blog upgrades rolling.
