Race Recap(s) Run or Dye 5K and Muddy Monk May Day! May Day! May Day! 10K

That three day weekend really tanked my blogging plans…house and yard work, hanging out and relaxing really made this a busy week. Plus that extra day off work always makes for chaos at my desk. Even though I didn’t post them, I did do a weekly plan and I weighed in with Weight Watchers.  I’ll be back to normal next week.

So remember last week when I planned to run two races this past Saturday? Well, things didn’t quite go as planned, and I only actually ran in one of the races. It wasn’t for lack of trying though!

I showed up to Run or Dye (my 9am race) about 8:20. I got parking pretty quickly (considering) and headed off to the line to get my number, t-shirt, and assorted swag. I also met up with Krista and some of Nik’s family members who were doing the run with Krista. (I has planned to stick with them until I realized the whole two races, one day issue.)

Run or Dye Line

The race was crazy crowded. I had no idea how huge this event was going to be – no idea. We waited in line for almost 35 minutes before we finally had our numbers and swag and then headed to the starting chute 5 – 10 minutes before the scheduled 9:00 start time.

Run or Dye start

This is where I was starting to realize that I was probably going to have to make a decision. The line for the start was absolutely insane. It extended the whole starting chute and then curved around and wrapped back onto itself. The race started, and they were releasing people in waves of a few hundred every 5 minutes or so. It quickly became apparent that there was no way I was going to be able to run this and make it to the Muddy Monk 10K. I considered starting the race and then just leaving the course part way through, but just making it to the starting line before I needed to leave was looking more and more questionable. I finally decided that running the 10K was more important to me, and it was time to bail on Run or Dye. So I got in my car, and after finding someone to escort me out because they had things so blocked off I couldn’t figure out how to get out of the parking lot, I headed to the Muddy Monk May Day! May Day! May Day! race.

May Day 10K 1

As usual, the Muddy Monk race was awesome. This course was probably my favorite of the courses thus far. It was wet and muddy and kind of slow moving, but it was an absolute blast! A lot of the course was through heavily wooded areas where the path was barely one person wide with lots of branches to climb over. The course was a 5K loop that you ran one, two or three times depending on the distance you signed up for.

May Day 10K Finish 1
After the race, the guy behind me told me he kept trying to pass my coming up to the finish. I told him I kepy trying to out run him.

My official finish time was 1:04:58. My GPS app had the course coming up a bit short of 10K, but I had conflicting distances between the two apps so who knows. I do suspect it was a little short given the slowing down and stopping that was required in a lot of instances. I was also taking my time because I was running in my usual road shoes (which I think are now in need of being replaced.) About ½ mile from my house I realized I forgot my trail shoes. I didn’t think it would be that big of a deal so I didn’t go back for them. That was probably a mistake, but it turned out fine.

Muddy shoes

While I was bummed I didn’t get to do Run or Dye with Krista and company, I absolutely do not regret my decision to bail on it. I think it would have been run, but I had a blast (as usual!) with Muddy Monk.

The Sign You’ve Got a Racing Problem…

…I realized something about 35 minutes ago.  I’m signed up for two races next Saturday.  I’m not entire sure how it happened, but I’m supposed to be running at Run or Dye Chicago 5K and the Muddy Monk May Day! May Day! May Day! 10K.

Okay, so, realistically I know exactly what happened.  I bought the Muddy Monk season pass and mentally signed up for all the races, but didn’t put any of them on the calendar until I had officially signed up.  Run or Dye was a Groupon (or maybe Living Social) deal I bought to run with Krista.  Apparently I didn’t put that on the calendar either so when I finally officially signed up for the May Day race, I didn’t know there was a scheduling conflict,

BRIGHT SIDE!  The races are at different times and the start/ finish lines are only actually about 15 minutes away from each other!

Race Conflict Map

So, as you’ve probably guessedby now, I’m plannign to run both!  Run or Dye starts at 9am and May Day starts at 10.  I’ll have to finish the 5K, change my shirt (so I don’t get colorful dust all over my car) and high tail it to the second race, but it’ll be fun!  Right?  Right?!

I’m just glad I didn’t sign up for the May Day 15K!
